It is more than harmful to the progress of science Myron - it stops progress and deprives our "stressed world" of the technological, social, environmental and economic benefits that the new science is suggests is possible. Perhaps we should change stance and emphasise the economic benefits (political leaders take note) that could arise from the new technologies, the reduction and better control of waste, the more prudent use of limited natural resources etc. There is a buzz phrase in political thought these days, "sustainable development" (the integration of social, economic and environmental issues). We will only move towards this ideal if we develop new sources of energy and transport, cut down on emissions and waste (to air, land, and sea) and develop more environmentally friendly and sustainable ways to feed a world population that is set to explode, if predictions are accurate, from the current 6 billion to 9 billion by mid century.
