Translation of the Letter of 23rd June 1990 from Rev. R. S. Thomas: "Thank you for your package. I agree with most of what you say, but unfortunately in the Wales of today we have a snowball's chance in hell. I am a Republican but can count membership on the fingers of my hand. Therefore I concentrate on the small circle of which I am a part. Three years ago I established Cyfeillion Lly^n, a society for safeguarding language and dealing in other matters such as the environment of Lly^n. You can imagine the extent of our success! But we stand and fight." Truly Yours, R. S. Thomas." cc Welsh Assembly Note by MWE The late Rev. R. S. Thomas is generally considered to be among the greatest of poets in the English language, certainly one of the greatest lyrical voices of his generation, and wrote his biography in the Welsh language, he was Rector of Manafon, Vicar of Aberdaron. It is believed that he was nominated several times for a Nobel Prize in literature. He has now been recognized by an R. S. Thomas Centre in University of Wales Bangor, but as he would have described it, "crumbs from the Englishman's table". The students at UW Aberystwyth wanted him to be Chancellor of the University of Wales, and I wholly agree with them.
